Solid vs Engineered Hardwood Flooring
Solid Hardwood Floors
Solid hardwood planks are completely comprised of hardwood. Solid hardwood flooring is commonly made using oak, walnut or maple, pine, teak, and cherry trees.
Solid hardwood floors are very durable. With proper care, they can last up to 100 years after the hardwood floor installation. That means you may only have to replace your flooring once in your lifetime.
Solid hardwood flooring can typically be refinished and sanded down about 4-6 times throughout its life. It depends on the thickness.
Engineered Wood Flooring
Engineered hardwood flooring looks virtually the same as solid hardwood flooring. Unlike solid hardwood flooring, engineered flooring is not one solid piece. It is comprised of 3 or 5 layers of wood. The first layer is a hardwood that can be refinished and sanded about 1-2 times. This layer is also known as the "wear layer" and the thickness of this layer determines the quality of the product. The second layer is a thicker piece of softer plywood. Then the last layer is MFD board.
Many people opt to engineer hardwood flooring because it is usually about half the price of solid hardwood flooring. Engineered hardwood flooring is also less susceptible to warping caused by temperature and humidity fluctuations.
